Three Men Jailed for Smuggling Albanian Migrants by Boat
Three men have been locked up at Newport Crown Court for plotting to sneak Albanian nationals into the UK by sea. The trio, aged between 45 and 55, were caught after organising illegal boat trips from France.
Boat Trips from Cherbourg Exposed
Jean-Pierre Labelle, 45, from Ryde, led the operation. He arranged two voyages from Cherbourg, France, and even helped get hold of the boats. Labelle also brought in experts to ensure the journeys went ahead.
Stephen Redhead, 47, from Shanklin, was recruited by Labelle due to his knowledge of a vessel called the Anore. Redhead then hired Christopher Barber, 55, also from Shanklin, who had engineering skills to maintain the boats.
Profit Over People: Unsafe Boats and Risky Trips
Money was the main driver here, and the men showed zero concern for the safety of the migrants. The Anore was in poor shape, and the second boat, the Freedom, only had one lifejacket on board when police in France intercepted it.
Ian Harris, CPS Wessex Senior Crown Prosecutor, said: “We are dedicated to prosecuting people who seek to transport others to the UK illegally, often in dangerous conditions that exploit vulnerable migrants who may be forced to repay large sums for their passage. It is vital we disrupt this organised crime.”
