Travellers’ Illegal Horse Races Shut Down A33 Amid Chaos and Animal Cruelty
A wild horse racing event on the A33 has sparked outrage after police shut the busy road for days. Over 200 people gathered, standing on the carriageway and hanging out of vehicles, forcing authorities to act. The event’s dangerous nature was underscored by the discovery of two dead horses near East Stratton and Micheldever.
Dead Horses and Serious Injuries Raise Alarms
The cause of the horses’ deaths remains a mystery. Meanwhile, a third horse was found with a severe wound needing nine stitches. The RSPCA is investigating possible abuse and cruelty alongside the police. Reports say horses were pushed too hard during the illegal races, with one even losing a shoe mid-race.
Police and Authorities Clamp Down on Unauthorised Encampments
Police confirmed multiple unauthorised Traveller encampments have sprung up across car parks from Winchester to Basingstoke, believed to be linked to the so-called “King of the Road” races. Hampshire police seized three vehicles and arrested one person for drug driving at the event.
Local councils are working hard to remove the Travellers from these sites. Winchester MP Steve Brine has demanded answers from police over their slow response, highlighting the breach of COVID-19 rules and highway laws.
Residents Furious Over Chaos and Litter
Locals have slammed the mayhem for trapping residents in their homes and leaving behind piles of litter. Police had no choice but to close the A33 between Larkwhistle Farm Road and Woodmancott junctions for a second day.
Videos show 4x4s circling horses and traps, with passengers dangerously hanging out of vehicles as bets were placed on the races. Police say they took a tactical approach, knowing the risks involved on the busy highway.
Backlash from Traveller Community Amid Accusations
A Traveller community spokesperson hit back, calling the police action “racist again … against Travellers.” Hampshire Police responded:
“We have increased our patrols in the area. Officers will engage with those in attendance and use enforcement action where necessary and proportionate to do so. Our officers will deal with any offences and will be capturing evidence to enable them to follow up with any incidents not dealt with at this time.”
The chaotic horse races have left questions hanging about safety, respect for the law, and animal welfare. But one thing is clear: the A33’s illegal racetrack has come to a crashing halt—for now.
