Knife-Wielding Man Sparks Police Chase before Boarding Packed Train
A mid-50s man was detained after a dramatic police pursuit through South London, ending with him boarding a train armed with a knife.
Chaos in Queens Road
Police were alerted at 12:20pm on Tuesday, 18 February, after reports of a man armed with a knife experiencing a mental health crisis at an address on Queens Road, SE15. By the time officers arrived, the man had fled in a car.
High-Speed Chase and Taser Arrest
Officers quickly tracked down the vehicle and authorised a pursuit. The suspect abandoned the car on Queens Road and sprinted along the railway lines towards Queens Road Peckham Station. Still clutching the knife, he hopped onto a busy train.
Police followed and used a Taser to safely detain the man onboard, preventing any harm to passengers.
Man Detained Under Mental Health Act
London Ambulance Service attended the scene. The man was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act. Thankfully, no one—public or police—was injured during the unsettling episode.
Detective Superintendent Nicky Arrowsmith said: “This incident highlights the challenges that police officers confront on a daily basis. I am very proud of the courage and determination of all the officers involved, and pleased that their work helped ensure no member of the public suffered any harm.”
