60mph Police Chase Ends in Crash as Volkswagen Ploughs into Railings in Fratton
Chaos hit Fratton tonight after a high-speed police chase zoomed through Portsmouth streets and ended with a car smashing into metal railings on Lake Road. Witnesses say it was like a scene straight out of Fast and Furious.
Boy Racers’ Thrill Ride Turns Nasty
The drama unfolded when a silver Volkswagen Golf, chased by police at around 60mph, raced through the busy junction of Fratton Road and Lake Road. The driver took the corner too fast, lost control, and ploughed through railings. The car came to rest facing oncoming traffic, airbags deployed.
Two passengers were still inside the wrecked vehicle when officers caught up with them. Both were arrested and needed medical treatment. One passenger, reportedly suffering facial injuries, was rushed to QA Hospital. The driver tried to flee but was swiftly arrested and is now being questioned.
Witnesses Describe High-Speed Havoc
Fratton local Katie Jennison-White was shocked by the chaos outside her home. She said,
“I was sat in my living room when we heard a crash, shortly followed by police sirens. This was caused by a police chase. After all the damage, a man in a grey hoodie and light shorts ran away.”
Another eyewitness told us the Golf was “being chased by the police, took the junction too quickly and careered over the road. They smashed through the metal railings and their airbag was deployed.”
A separate witness described the car speeding down Lake Road “at over 50mph being chased by a police car.”
Police Appeal and Ongoing Investigation
All three occupants, described as white males in their early 30s, are now in custody. One reportedly has a known criminal history in Portsmouth.
Police have sealed off Lake Road and are urging motorists to avoid the area while investigations and clean-up continue. Paramedics from South Central Ambulance Services attended the scene treating two people.
