Probe Launched After Hampshire Officer Throws Teen to Ground on Isle of Wight
Hampshire Police are under scrutiny after a shocking incident at Newport Bus Station on the Isle of Wight saw a teenage boy thrown to the floor by a police sergeant. The force launched an official probe following the dramatic footage captured on a mobile phone.
Incident Caught on Camera at Newport Bus Station
On Friday 8 June, officers were called to Orchard Street at around 4pm investigating a missing 14-year-old girl. Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the girl has since been found and is receiving support from appropriate agencies.
During the search, police detained a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of a public order offence. The viral video shows one teenager being put into the back of a police van, while a uniformed sergeant throws a second teen to the ground and applies a headlock.
Hampshire Police Launch Professional Standards Probe
Hampshire Constabulary’s Professional Standards Department has confirmed an investigation is underway after a complaint about the use of force was made. A spokesperson said:
“In relation to a video subsequently posted online, we can confirm that we have received a complaint about the use of force. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by officers from the constabulary’s Professional Standards Department. It would not be appropriate to provide further detail until the facts have been established and the outcome of the investigation known.”
Teenager Invited to Voluntary Interview
The matter remains under investigation, and the teenager involved has been invited to attend a voluntary police interview. The case highlights growing concerns over police conduct during public order incidents.
