Gaia Pope Murder Probe: 49-Year-Old Man Arrested After Clothes Found Near Swanage

A 49-year-old man connected to missing Dorset teen Gaia Pope has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police have sealed off a field near Swanage after a member of the public discovered women’s clothing there.

Clothes Found in Field Spark Murder Investigation

The clothes were found at 10:28am on Thursday 16 November by a passerby in open land just north of the coastal path. Detectives are yet to confirm who owned the clothing but have informed Gaia’s family of the grim find.

Gaia’s Disappearance and Ongoing Search

Gaia, 19, from Langton Matravers, vanished on the afternoon of Tuesday 7 November. She was last seen near Morrison Road, wearing grey and white leggings, white trainers, and a red checked shirt.

Since then, an extensive search involving Dorset Search and Rescue, coastguard teams, NPAS helicopter, and police units from nearby forces has been underway.

Police Appeal for Information

Senior Investigating Officer Neil Devoto said: “Following the discovery of these items, we are conducting a thorough search of the area. We have seized the clothing and are working to identify the owner. Our thoughts are with Gaia’s family during this difficult time.”

He urged anyone with information about Gaia’s whereabouts or suspicious activity around Morrison Road and Priests Way since 7 November to come forward immediately.

Further Developments and Arrests

Earlier this week, warrants were executed at two Swanage addresses. Three vehicles have been seized as part of the inquiry. A 19-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman, both known to Gaia, were also arrested on suspicion of murder but have since been released under investigation.

Police continue to appeal for any tips. Contact Dorset Police via their 123.
