A 19-year-old woman has reported a sexual offence that happened after leaving Astoria nightclub between 2.30am and 3.30am.
Specialist officers are supporting the woman involved.
Two Men Arrested in Rape Investigation
A 20-year-old man from portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth has been arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in police custody. Earlier, police arrested a 23-year-old man from Kent in connection with the case, but he’s now on conditional bail as enquiries continue.
Police Reassure Public Amid Safety Concerns
Detective Inspector Richard Gibson said: “We understand how worrying this incident is for the public. We’re following all lines of enquiry to get to the bottom of this.”
He added: “We do not believe there’s any wider risk to the public. Officers will keep patrolling busy pubs, clubs, and restaurants this weekend, watching for signs of suspicious behaviour. We’re also working closely with venues to spot vulnerable people and potential offenders.”
Safety Measures in Place Across Portsmouth Nightlife
Richard Gibson continued: “Our licensing team, neighbourhood officers, and Portsmouth City Council are regularly visiting venues to boost safety. We train staff and door security to identify vulnerable individuals and create safer environments.”
He urged: “If you feel unsafe or vulnerable, please speak to venue staff, security, or patrolling officers. Street pastors also patrol Guildhall Walk on Friday and Saturday nights. Plus, the South Central Ambulance Service’s Safe Space will be open at the Civic Offices from 10pm to 3am on weekends.”
