Tragic Fall Shuts Down Portsmouth Street
Police have sealed off Buckingham Street in Portsmouth after a person is believed to have jumped from a building this afternoon. The shocking incident happened shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, 18th July 2017.
Road Closures and Police Guard
Authorities have closed surrounding roads and are preventing both pedestrians and vehicles from entering the area. 1 Road, which links Arundel Street and Paradise Street, is also shut, with police community support officers stationed to keep watch. Vehicles in the nearby NCP car park can still exit but no one is allowed to enter the cordoned zone.
Rescue Attempts and Recovery
The victim is thought to have fallen from a ninth-floor window at Chandos Rise, Buckingham Street. Emergency services, including Hampshire Police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue, responded quickly. Fire crews used an aerial ladder platform to assist in recovering the body, which was tragically confirmed deceased at the scene.
A nearby contractor attempted a daring rescue using a ladder to reach the flat roof where the person landed, aiding paramedics. Sadly, efforts to save the individual were unsuccessful.
Official Statements and Ongoing Inquiry
“We received reports of a person falling from height on Buckingham Street,” said a South Central Ambulance Service spokesperson. “A paramedic and rapid response vehicle were dispatched immediately.”
Hampshire Police confirmed they were called to Buckingham Road just before 2.20pm. A statement revealed that a woman’s body was found on a rooftop.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
