Shock as Shooter Strikes at Scarborough Pub Opening

Chaos erupted on the evening of Friday, March 7, 2025, when a gunman opened fire at the grand opening of the Piper Arms Pub in Scarborough, Toronto. Twelve people were injured in the attack that shocked the bustling town centre, forcing emergency services into rapid action.

Gunman Flees After Shooting Inside Packed Pub

Toronto police rushed to 520 Progress Avenue around 10:40 p.m. following reports of gunfire inside the pub, which had just celebrated its opening night. Multiple patrons were hit by bullets, with injuries spanning from minor wounds to critical conditions. Paramedics quickly transported victims to hospitals, including a trauma centre. Four are confirmed in non-life-threatening condition, while the status of eight others is still unclear.

The suspect, last seen wearing a black balaclava, fled the scene in a silver car and remains at large. Police have set up a command post nearby and closed Progress Avenue between Ellesmere Road and Highway 401 to aid the investigation. No motive has yet been revealed.

Mayor Olivia Chow Demands Swift Justice

“I am deeply troubled to hear reports of a shooting at a pub in Scarborough,” said Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow on social media. “I have spoken to Chief Demkiw who assured me all necessary resources have been deployed. This is an early and ongoing investigation – police will provide further details. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

Community on Edge as Scarborough Recovers from Violence

The Piper Arms, located on the site of the former Baton Rouge Steakhouse & Bar, was celebrating amid a busy commercial area near Scarborough Town Centre when the violence broke out. Toronto Fire Services responded immediately. Nearby businesses, including a Swiss Chalet, stayed closed into Saturday morning due to the ongoing police presence.

The shooting has alarmed local residents, especially given Scarborough’s status as a lively shopping and entertainment hub. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact 911 immediately.

This attack adds to a recent spate of shootings and arsons in Toronto, some linked to disputes in the towing industry, but police have not connected this case to those incidents. Witnesses described a terrifying scene with patrons fleeing amid trails of blood in the snow.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw promises all resources, including the Emergency Task Force, are fully engaged. The focus remains on supporting victims and hunting down the perpetrator as the city demands answers.
