Man arrested after car crash leaves vehicle wrecked near Hailsham

Emergency Services Called to Mysterious Crash

Police swooped on a scene off the A22 Hailsham Road close to the Cophall Wood recycling centre after reports of a badly damaged car caught in dense bushes. Emergency crews were scrambled at 8:55 PM on Friday, June 7. Despite scouring the car and surrounding undergrowth, no occupants were immediately found.

Suspect Traced and Arrested Hours Later

After a lengthy search, officers tracked down a 53-year-old man linked to the crash. He was taken to hospital for a check-up and found uninjured. However, the man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and possession with intent to supply a Class B drug.

Investigation Still Underway as Man Released on Bail

Following further police enquiries, the man has been released on bail while investigations continue. The wrecked car was recovered, and the A22 was reopened early on Saturday, June 8. Police stress this was not a gang-related incident but have set up a crime scene to probe the circumstances.

Police Seek Witnesses

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact the police immediately to assist with their ongoing investigation.
