Major Raids Smash People-Smuggling Gang Using Lorries to Shuttle Migrants Into UK

Police launched a dawn blitz today on a criminal gang suspected of using lorries to sneak migrants into the UK.

Top Suspect Nabbed in Dagenham

A 39-year-old man, believed to be the mastermind behind the network, was arrested in Dagenham on suspicion of conspiring to facilitate illegal immigration. Three other men were cuffed at homes in Ilford, Leytonstone, and Streatham in connection with the ring.

How the Smugglers Operated

The gang allegedly rigged lorries to be secretly broken into, allowing migrants to be loaded without the drivers’ knowledge. They even fitted tracking devices on the vehicles to monitor their progress as they crossed into the UK.

These arrests relate to two chilling 2019 incidents when 32 migrants were found packed inside HGVs in the Netherlands and France.

Law Enforcement Cracks Down Hard

“Organised immigration crime is a relentless, dangerous threat. These smugglers have zero regard for human life,” said NCA branch commander Andy Noyes. “Hiding people in lorries might stay under the radar, but it’s no less deadly. We’ve seen tragic consequences.”

The National Crime Agency is working with UK and European partners to dismantle these ruthless groups and break their illicit business model.

This is the NCA’s second major crackdown on people smugglers this week. Across Europe, around 40 suspects linked to gangs ferrying thousands of migrants by small boats to the UK were arrested — marking one of the largest operations against migrant crime syndicates in recent memory.
