Six dead after air ambulance jet crashes into homes near Nairobi.
Tragedy Strikes Mwihoko: Air Ambulance Plunges Into Residential Area
A Cessna Citation XLS, operated by AMREF Flying Doctors, slammed into a residential area in Mwihoko, Kiambu County, just outside Nairobi on Thursday afternoon, 7 August 2025. The aircraft took off from Nairobi at 2:17pm, bound for Somaliland. Less than 40 minutes into the flight, it suddenly came down, crashing into several buildings and sparking chaos in the densely populated neighbourhood.
Six Confirmed Dead, More Injured
Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed the grim toll:
- Four people on board, including the pilot, were killed.
- Two locals inside a struck house also lost their lives.
Two other civilians suffered serious injuries and are currently receiving emergency treatment.
Initial reports from Kenya Red Cross mistakenly called it a helicopter, but it was later confirmed the wreckage was from a fixed-wing medical jet.
Cause of Crash Still a Mystery
AMREF Flying Doctors issued a statement:
“We are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation.”
Investigators have yet to determine why the aircraft went down.
Emergency Crews Battle to Save and Recover
Kenya Red Cross, local fire squads, and aviation teams rushed to the scene. Rescue workers sifted through debris as smoke billowed from shattered homes. The jet’s mangled remains lay strewn across the disaster zone, with terrified locals watching on.
Aviation Authorities Launch Full Investigation
Kenya’s Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has been called in to probe the crash. Recovery of the black box and thorough site analysis are expected over the coming days to shed light on this deadly disaster.
