Huge Fire Erupts at Fawley Refinery – Smoke Plumes Turn Skies Dark
Blaze Sparks Emergency Response
Fire crews scrambled to the ExxonMobil Fawley refinery after thick plumes of smoke were spotted billowing from the fuel processing site on Monday lunchtime. Just after midday, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to assist the refinery’s on-site teams in tackling the fire.
Massive Smoke Cloud Visible for Miles
The blaze sent a large plume of smoke into the air, visible from far and wide. Firefighters from Southampton and Portsmouth stations swiftly deployed, activating a well-rehearsed emergency plan and rolling out numerous fire appliances to the scene.
Fire Quickly Under Control With No Injuries
A statement from ExxonMobil confirmed the fire was isolated and swiftly contained by on-site emergency crews with help from Hampshire Fire and Rescue. “There have been no injuries and all personnel are accounted for,” they assured.
“We are currently using our flares as a safety measure. This is completely safe and controlled. We apologise for any concern or disruption caused to the local community and will provide updates as soon as more information is available.”
The fire service reported several crews are already heading back to base as the situation is stabilised. Locals have been urged not to panic amid flare use.
