Lorry Blaze at Clacket Lane Services: Driver Escapes Unharmed
A lorry trailer carrying Christmas decorations was torched at Clacket Lane services in Surrey. The terrifying arson attack happened between 11pm and midnight on Tuesday, 8 November, but luckily, the driver got away unscathed.
Fire Deliberately Set at Southside Services
Surrey Police believe the fire was started on purpose while the lorry was parked up at the Southside services. The green curtain-sided trailer was completely gutted by the flames.
Driver Saved by Fellow Haulier
The lorry driver was asleep in his cab when a fellow lorry driver spotted the blaze and alerted him. Thanks to this quick thinking, the driver unhitched his cab and drove away just before the fire could spread and damage it.
Possible Linked Sabotage on Other Lorries
Police discovered other curtain-sided lorries had their curtains slashed. Officers are probing whether these incidents are connected to the fire, suggesting a chilling spree of vandalism at the services.
PC David Every from Tandridge Area Policing Team said: “I am urging anybody who was at the services and saw anybody acting suspicious that evening to contact us as soon as possible. The fire caused catastrophic damage to the vehicle but the outcome could have been far worse had the driver not been woken and alerted to the fire.”
Surrey Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference 45160098898.
