Family Holiday Horror at Butlin’s: Toddler’s Head Injury Sparks Hospital Drama
A family holiday at Butlin’s turned into a nightmare when a five-year-old girl suffered a serious head injury on a waterslide, resulting in a hospital operation to stitch her head back together.
Nightmare on the Slide
The little girl, Rhia, had been going down the slide several times. Each time, lifeguards instructed her to throw her arm bands and inflatable ring down the slide first. Her parent decided to have a go too, lying back as advised to stay safe.
But disaster struck near the bottom of the slide. Going fast and unable to stop, the parent collided feet-first with Rhia, who was still in the shallow water below. The child was propelled into the air and hit the pool bottom, sustaining a severe head injury.
Shocking Lack of Lifeguard Response
Blood poured from Rhia’s head as she screamed in pain. The parent expected immediate help but found no lifeguards nearby. Despite the visible injury, no one rushed over. A passing swimmer had to fetch help.
At first aid, two lifeguards refused to call an ambulance, claiming paramedics have “issues coming here” and that “this happens a lot.” The parent was stunned by their attitude and the lack of supervision at the slide’s bottom, especially given previous incidents.
Hospital Horror and Butlin’s Cold Shoulder
Rhia spent over four hours in hospital that day and returned the next for a nerve-scarring operation. She now bears a 4cm head scar and may suffer permanent numbness. Meanwhile, the family missed out on all holiday fun.
No one from Butlin’s reached out after the accident. When the parent returned, staff offered a “goodwill” return holiday voucher, carefully avoiding responsibility for the injury. The voucher covered only part of future holiday costs, forcing the family to pay an additional £1,000 to £2,000.
More Trouble Adds to Misery
- The family’s luggage went missing from reception during the hospital visit.
- Paid meals were missed with promises of future compensation vouchers.
- The parent felt isolated and ignored by staff, suspecting a cover-up.
- Confusing accident paperwork was forced upon the parent, with requests for formal written applications to obtain copies.
This tragic incident has left a family traumatised and questioning Butlin’s safety and customer care standards. It’s a shocking warning for holidaymakers – watch your backs around the slide!
