Drama on Isle of Wight as Child Rescued from Well
Fire crews raced to the Isle of Wight this afternoon after a 9-year-old boy got trapped three metres down a well. The tense rescue unfolded at Sunset Ridge on Whitwell Road, near Ventnor, just after 3.30pm on Tuesday, May 29.
Massive Rescue Operation Underway
Firefighters from Shanklin, Ryde, and Newport, along with a rescue tender from Newport, quickly arrived at the scene. Paramedics from the Isle of Wight ambulance service were also called in, with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance on standby to provide critical support.
Geoff Walls of Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue revealed:
“Twenty firefighters and two officers are assisting. A firefighter was lowered down using an Arizona Tripod system to reach the child.”
Child Rescued After Fall During Game
The youngster reportedly fell down the well while playing hide and seek with his sister. Neighbours said the family had only recently moved into the property, and the children had been visiting.
Whitwell Road has been closed between Sheepwash Lane and Southford Lane, with traffic diverted via Merryl Lane.
Child Flown to Hospital
Once rescued, the boy was placed on a scoop stretcher and airlifted alongside his mother to Southampton General Hospital for treatment. Paramedics are currently tending to him at the scene.
