First UK Case of Deadly Mpox Clade 1b Hits London
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed the first UK case of the deadly mpox Clade 1b strain — and it’s in London.
Patient Linked to Recent Africa Trip
The virus was detected in a single patient who recently returned from Africa, where this aggressive strain is spreading fast. The patient was quickly moved to the Royal Free Hospital’s High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID) unit in London for expert care.
Global Alarm Over Mpox Surge
This comes just after Germany reported its first Clade 1b case. Meanwhile, Africa faces a worrying surge with over 1,000 deaths linked to the strain. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the outbreak a global health emergency for the second time in two years.
UK Officials Maintain Calm but Stay Vigilant
UKHSA insists the risk to the public remains low but urges travellers from affected regions to stay alert. Health officials are working closely with international partners to keep the situation under tight watch and prevent any further spread.
“We continue to monitor this situation carefully and maintain precautionary measures to protect public health,” UKHSA said.
