£500 Million Pothole Fund Set to Fix 10 Million Road Blights!
A massive £500 million cash injection has been handed to councils across the UK to tackle the nation’s worst potholes. The funding aims to repair the equivalent of 10 million potholes, part of a larger £1.1 billion programme dedicated to road maintenance and upgrades.
MP Cheers Funding Boost for Hampshire Roads
Caroline Dinenage, MP for Hampshire, welcomed the cash splash. She said, “I am pleased to see funding to fix our potholes and improve our Hampshire highways. I look forward to seeing the benefits that this will bring to constituents when we can more widely travel as COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifted.”
Since 2015, the Department for Transport has poured £296 million into the Pothole Action Fund and handed a one-off £240 million to highway/" title="Highway" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">highway authorities in 2018, showing a long-term commitment to tackling road damage.
Transport Minister: Potholes Are More Than Just Annoying
Transport Minister Baroness Vere stressed the dangers posed by poor road conditions. She warned, “We know potholes are more than just a nuisance – they can be dangerous to drivers and cyclists alike, and cause damage to thousands of vehicles every year.”
She added, “The funding allocated today will help councils ensure roads in their area are kept up to standard, and that the potholes that blight road users can be dealt with promptly.”
