Dunkirk Airport Shut Down After WWII Pipe Bomb Discovered
Solent Airport, famous as the filming location for Harry Styles’ Dunkirk movie, was shut this afternoon after workers unearthed a World War Two pipe bomb. Contractors found the deadly device while installing new ducting for a power station.
100-Metre Safety Cordon and Road Closures
Bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene, setting up a 100-metre safety cordon. Nearby roads, including Stubbington Lane and its junctions with Moody Road, Eric Road, Sea Lane, and Crofton Avenue, were also shut down while the device is dealt with. Traffic diversions are now in place from Crofton Avenue and Salterns Road to Bells Lane.
Drivers should brace for delays and consider alternative routes around this ongoing disruption.
Council and Police on High Alert
Fareham Borough Council confirmed the pipe bomb was uncovered during construction at the new substation on Swordfish Business Park. Council leader Sean Woodward said:
“It looked like a pipe bomb. We are not taking any risks. There were many pipe bombs laid during the war, and this could be one of those that was missed.”
Woodward added, “Or it could be something completely innocent. Either way, caution is key.”
Police and Bomb Squad Respond
Hampshire Constabulary received the call about the suspected ordnance at 12:38pm. A spokeswoman said:
“We were called to the HMS Daedalus site following the discovery of what is believed to be historic ordnance. Officers and an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team are currently investigating. No evacuation has been necessary so far.”
For now, Solent Airport remains closed as bomb experts work to make the area safe. The discovery has sparked memories of the wartime dangers still lurking beneath the surface.
