Lorry Jackknifes on M27 Near Southampton Airport, Causes Major Chaos
Two lanes of the M27 motorway remain shut between junctions 7 and 5 after a lorry carrying a shipping container jackknifed in the early hours near Southampton Airport. The smash has triggered a massive clean-up and investigation.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Just after 2am, emergency crews arrived to find the LGV tractor and trailer twisted across lanes two and three. A car was trapped beneath the tractor unit. Firefighters from Hightown, Eastleigh, and Redbridge battled the scene with cutting gear to free a trapped occupant.
Fire crews used cutting equipment to free one person from the vehicle trapped between the tractor unit and trailer,” fire officials confirmed. The victim was rushed to hospital by ambulance.
Recovery & Road Closures Continue
Westbound lanes two and three, plus lane three of the eastbound carriageway, remain closed as specialist cranes and heavy lifting gear from Boarhunt Garage in Fareham try to clear the wreckage. Officers say there are currently no delays past the incident site.
Barriers Stop Danger Escalating
The truck smashed into central reservation barriers, which did their job by preventing the lorry from crossing into oncoming traffic. However, these barriers suffered heavy damage during the crash.
At this stage, the condition of the drivers involved remains unclear. Hampshire Roads Policing continue their investigation into the cause of the collision.
