M5 Shut Both Ways After Horror Crash Near Weston-super-Mare
Serious Smash Closes Key Stretch
The M5 motorway is completely closed in both directions following a major collision near Weston-super-Mare. Emergency services rushed to the scene just after 11pm, between Junction 21 (Clevedon) and Junction 20 (Weston-super-Mare). Avon and Somerset Police launched an investigation and are still at the scene.
National Highways confirmed the southbound carriageway is shut from Junction 19 to Junction 21. Northbound is closed between Junction 21 and Junction 20 as well. Police warn these closures could last for hours, causing severe disruption during rush hour.
Chaos on the Roads – Diversions in Place
Motorists face gridlock and long delays with the key motorway stretch out of action. Police urge drivers to avoid the area or follow official diversions:
- Northbound: Exit at J21, follow A370 through Congresbury, West Town, and Long Ashton, then take A4 westbound towards Avonmouth before rejoining the M5 at J18. Look for solid triangle diversion signs.
- Southbound: Exit at J18, follow hollow circle signs via A4, A3029, A3070, then A4174 and A38 before rejoining M5 at J22.
Light vehicles can also use an alternative southbound route via J19, A369, A370, A4174, and A38 to J22.
