Malmo Confirmed as Host City for Eurovision 2024
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has unveiled Malmo as the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The glittering 68th edition will light up the Malmo Arena, with the grand final set for Saturday, May 11. Ahead of the climax, two semi-finals will take place on Tuesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 9.
Why Malmo? Sweden’s Star Power and History
Malmo clinched the hosting rights after Swedish star Loreen stormed to victory in 2023 with her haunting ballad “Tattoo.” This was no ordinary win – Loreen made history as the first woman to win Eurovision twice. Her triumph pushed Sweden level with Ireland’s record seven Eurovision wins overall.
The choice wasn’t random. Malmo boasts top-notch facilities, massive capacity for delegations, fans, media, and more. Its solid infrastructure and deep-rooted history with Eurovision sealed the deal. In fact, Malmo becomes only the third Swedish city to host Eurovision three times, underscoring its importance in the contest’s legacy.
Eurovision Boss Hails Malmo’s Magic
Martin Osterdahl, Eurovision’s executive supervisor, couldn’t hide his excitement. “Malmo has a special place in Eurovision history,” he said. “Its vibrant atmosphere, excellent venues, and stellar infrastructure make it perfect for the world’s biggest live music event.”
Osterdahl also praised Malmo’s dedication to diversity, inclusivity, and innovation, values that echo Eurovision’s own spirit.
Sustainability and Convenience in the Spotlight
He highlighted Malmo’s compact size as a big plus, making it easy for delegations, fans, and media to get around. The city’s commitment to green initiatives and sustainability also aligns perfectly with Eurovision’s vision of a cleaner, greener future.
