Reading Prison Sold to Education Charity in Surprise Deal

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the sale of the iconic Reading Prison site to the Ziran Education Foundation, a non-profit group focused on educational projects.

Historic Site to Become Education Hub

After a rigorous bidding process to secure taxpayers’ best interests, Ziran won the rights to the former prison. They will now work with Reading Borough Council to get approval for redevelopment plans.

Ziran plans to create a new education centre on the site, featuring a museum that showcases the prison’s rich history and public exhibition spaces. This promises to bring valuable community services to Reading.

Sale Funds Reinvestment into Prison Reform

Money from the sale will be ploughed back into the prison estate to help reduce reoffending and improve public safety. The Ministry of Justice has raised over £105 million from selling old prison sites over the last ten years.
