Morton Common Bridge Shuts Down Tonight for Annual Safety Check

Sandown’s Morton Common Bridge on the Isle of Wight is closed tonight as engineers carry out crucial annual inspections. The closure kicked in at 9pm and will last until 5am tomorrow morning.

Traffic Diversions in Place

Motorists face detours while the bridge is under the microscope. Drivers will be rerouted via Perowne Way both ways, with no bus stops missed on Route Three. Local diversion routes are also in use for other vehicles.

Train Services Unaffected

Good news for rail commuters – train services continue as normal. The inspection is purely external and doesn’t disrupt rail traffic.

Bridge Standing Strong Despite Damage

Although engineers spotted several dents and holes caused by heavy goods vehicles crashing into the bridge over time, the structure remains sound. Safety checks reassure the public the bridge is fit for purpose.
