Commuters faced major delays tonight after a fire broke out right next to the railway track at 6.58pm.

Blaze Erupts by Gunwharf Quays

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene near Gunwharf Quays. Two fire engines and an aerial ladder from Southsea quickly arrived to tackle the blaze. The fire was swiftly put out with help from rail engineers overseeing safety.

Train Services in Turmoil

Great Western Railway confirmed: “Following a fire next to the track between Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth & Southsea, train services are starting to return to normal. Delays and cancellations may continue until the end of the day.”

Services affected included:

  • Great Western Railway between Portsmouth Harbour and Bristol Temple Meads / Cardiff Central
  • South Western Railway between Portsmouth Harbour and Southampton Central / London Waterloo
