Boxing Day Drama: Battle Traditional Meet and Foxhunt Protest Both Trigger Road Closures
Get ready for chaos on London Road this Boxing Day! At 11am, the street will shut for about 30 minutes as Battle Traditional Meet and the hounds take over. Meanwhile, Lewes High Street faces a longer lockdown, closing from 11am for up to an hour.
Two Events, Two Road Closures
Lewes District Council confirmed they’ve received two separate road closure requests for Boxing Day 2022.
“The first application was from the Southdown and Eridge Hunt. The second was from Action Against Foxhunting,” said Cllr Johnny Denis, Cabinet Member for Communities and Customers.
Both events will have separate road closures after consultations with statutory bodies. The council emphasised that approving these closures doesn’t mean they support either event.
Council Urges Peaceful Attendance
Cllr Denis added: “Guidance from Action Against Fox Hunting was carefully considered alongside national legislation when processing these applications. The issuing of a road closure is not an endorsement of an event. We would ask anyone who is planning to attend either event to do so peacefully.”
Boxing Day is set to be a tense showdown in Lewes, with both pro- and anti-foxhunting groups taking to the streets. Expect delays and keep your eyes peeled!
