Boxing Day Showdown: Battle Traditional Hunts Meet Foxhunt Protesters
Boxing Day clashes are set to shake Lewes and Battle! London Road in Battle will be shut for around 30 minutes at 11am as the traditional hunt meets its opponents head-on.
Lewes High Street Locked Down for Up to an Hour
Meanwhile, Lewes High Street faces road closures from 11am for up to an hour. The town is bracing itself for two rival events, each with official sanction but very different agendas.
Council Weighs In: Neutral but Firm on Peace
Lewes District Council Cabinet Member, Cllr Johnny Denis, explained:
“Lewes District Council received two applications for road closures in Lewes for Boxing Day 2022. The first came from the Southdown and Eridge Hunt, the second from Action Against Foxhunting.”
He added:
“After consulting statutory agencies, both events have been granted separate road closures within the town. Guidance from Action Against Foxhunting was carefully considered, alongside national laws governing road closures.”
“Issuing a road closure is not an endorsement of either event. We urge everyone attending to keep things peaceful.”
