M4 Horror: Two Dead and Multiple Injured in Separate Crashes

The M4 between Junctions 17 and 18 is shut both ways after two fatal crashes in the early hours today.

Early Morning Tragedy on Eastbound Carriageway

Just after 1:30am, a single-car collision on the eastbound side killed one man instantly. Another man suffered life-threatening head injuries and was rushed to Southmead Hospital, Bristol.

Second Crash Involving Lorries and Van Adds to Chaos

Two hours later, a massive smash involving two articulated lorries, a car, and a van hit the westbound carriageway. One man died at the scene. Two others were taken to Southmead Hospital. Alarmingly, one vehicle was carrying leaking propane gas canisters, forcing emergency teams to make the area safe.

Emergency Services Praise Public Patience Amid Investigation

“We had to respond to two truly tragic incidents this morning,” said Supt Phil Staynings. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. This is a complex case putting huge pressure on emergency services, and investigations will take time.”

“We are working closely with Highways England to reopen the road as soon as it’s safe. We hope to reopen the eastbound side by midday, but the westbound side will likely remain closed today.”

“Anyone who saw the incidents or has dash cam footage is urged to contact Wiltshire Police on 101.”

Drivers Warned to Avoid Area – Diversions in Place

Road users are urged to steer clear of this stretch due to heavy traffic on surrounding routes. Full diversion details are available via Highways England.

Anyone with information can report anonymously to Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
