Miracle Escape as Light Plane Crashes into Isle of Wight Marshland
A pilot and passenger have survived a terrifying plane crash in remote marshes near Bembridge after their light aircraft struck power cables and plummeted to the ground.
Air Ambulances Airlift Seriously Injured Pair
The crash happened just before 4pm, west of Bembridge Airport. Both occupants suffered serious injuries and were swiftly airlifted to southampton/" title="Southampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton Hospital by two air ambulances — one from Hampshire, another from the Isle of Wight and Thames Valley.
Hampshire Police confirmed the pilot and passenger remain in serious condition.
Emergency Crews Battle Tough Terrain for Rescue
Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue crews had to trek some distance into the marsh to reach the wreckage, using a Land Rover to transport cutting gear. A multi-agency response included Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, Hampshire Constabulary, and Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Road closures are in place on Sandown Road and Long Land Shute to aid emergency operations.
Investigation Underway as Chinook May Be Needed
The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been notified. It’s understood that the plane collided with power lines before crash landing in the marsh. A Chinook helicopter may be deployed to recover the damaged aircraft.
