A new Universal theme park and resort in Bedfordshire, set to open in 2031, promises to create 28,000 jobs and pump nearly £50bn into the UK economy by 2055, according to government and company estimates. Media giant Comcast NBCUniversal will invest over £5bn in the five-year construction phase, backed by a £1.3bn government package to upgrade local transport, including the A421 and Wixams railway station. Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy both praised the project as a massive boost to UK jobs and the entertainment sector.

Massive Job Creation

The Universal United Kingdom Resort will generate around 20,000 construction jobs during its build and create 8,000 permanent roles when it opens.

The new employment opportunities will span hospitality, technology, construction, and creative industries, with 80% of workers expected to be recruited from Bedfordshire and nearby areas.

50bn Economic Impact

Officials estimate that the resort will unlock nearly £50 billion in economic growth by 2055. Positioned to become the UK’s top visitor attraction, it is expected to draw millions of visitors annually, including over one million from overseas.

Government Backing

The government’s £1.3 billion investment will fund essential infrastructure upgrades, such as improvements to the A421 road and enhancements at Wixams railway station, to support both residents and the rising tourist numbers.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves highlighted the project’s regional importance during her site visit.

Boost For Uk Entertainment

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy described the resort as “a huge vote of confidence in the UK,” emphasising its potential to strengthen the country’s entertainment and creative industries through significant private and public investment.
