Tragic Drama at Draycote Water: Man Feared Drowned After Heroic Rescue Attempt

A chilling tragedy unfolded at Draycote Water near Rugby today. A man is feared dead after plunging into the reservoir to save a younger male, believed to be his son.

Two Overboard from Small Boat

Emergency crews rushed to the scene at around 3pm on Thursday, 29 May, after reports that two people had fallen overboard from a small boat on the reservoir.

Sources close to the incident reveal a younger male — described as a child or teen — fell into the water first. He was wearing a life jacket at the time.

The older man, thought to be the boy’s father, bravely dived in to rescue him. However, his life jacket was found still inside the boat. Despite frantic efforts, he failed to resurface.

Younger Male Rushed to Hospital in Serious Condition

The younger male was pulled from the water and swiftly given medical attention. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, where he remains in serious condition. Hospital staff have yet to confirm his current status.

Meanwhile, Warwickshire Police, specialist dive teams, and fire crews launched a massive multi-agency search. The older man remains missing as night falls. The entire Draycote Water area is now closed to the public.

Police Appeal and Family Support

Warwickshire Police confirmed that specially trained officers are supporting the family. A spokesperson said:

“Draycote Water remains shut while we and our emergency service partners continue the search. We ask the public to stay clear and not enter the area as this could hinder ongoing operations.”

Public Frustration Over Info Channels

Some locals expressed frustration over unclear ways to provide eyewitness updates. One resident who saw the incident told UKNIP:

“There was no obvious way on the website to provide an update. I saw what happened but didn’t know who to contact. This delay could make a difference in an emergency.”

Authorities are now working to set up a public info portal to improve communication in future emergencies.

Ongoing Appeal for Witnesses

Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident at Draycote Water between 2:30pm and 4pm or has video footage to contact them on 101 quoting incident number 279-29/05/2025.
