Ex-Teacher Jailed for Historic Abuse at Christs Hospital School

Roger Martin, 83, a retired teacher from Christs Hospital School in Horsham, has been convicted of indecently assaulting a 10-year-old pupil back in 1976. The grim case emerged after more than four decades, ending an eight-day trial at Hove Crown Court with Martin facing justice.

Indecent Assault From 42 Years Ago

Martin, formerly the boy’s housemaster, preyed on his vulnerable pupil between September and December 1976. The retired teacher, now living in Great Dunham, Kings Lynn, will remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Long-Delayed Justice Following Police Probe

Sussex Police launched an investigation after receiving new information in November 2017. Detective Sergeant Rebecca Wilde revealed:

“Martin abused his position of trust, exploiting the boy for his own sick gratification, hoping it would never be exposed – and for over 40 years, he was right.”

The victim only came forward after hearing about other abuse cases at the same school.

School Cooperation and Ongoing Support

Detective Wilde praised Christs Hospital School for full cooperation during the investigation. She stressed the abuse was historic, with no implication for current staff or pupils.

“Anyone suffering sexual abuse, past or present, can contact us confidentially online or by calling 101 to speak to experienced investigators,” she added.
