York Roof Scam Shocker: Two Men Swindle Cash with Fake Repairs
A brazen scam unfolded on Lincoln Street, York, just after 1.20pm on Wednesday, 2 December 2020. Two men arrived at a victim’s home in a small white van, ladders perched on the roof, claiming his roof urgently needed fixing.
Quick Cash Grab – Then They Vanish
The pair forced their way inside and demanded a hefty upfront payment for materials, promising to start the job the very next day. The victim handed over the cash – but the roofing rogues never returned.
Police Hunt Two Suspects with Distinct Looks
- Man One: White, clean-shaven, about 5ft 7in, very grey or white hair, well-built, late 50s to early 60s. Dressed in a grey/white top and jeans. Spoke softly with a slight Irish accent.
- Man Two: White male, in his 30s.

North Yorkshire Police urge anyone with information – including CCTV, dash-cam or doorbell footage – to come forward. Officers are keen to hear from anyone else targeted by similar “traders” or who spotted the men or van.
