Boxing Day Horror: Teen Joseph Whitchurch Fatally Stabbed

Joseph Whitchurch, 16, was brutally stabbed to death in the early hours of Boxing Day 2020 by petty criminal and drug dealer Jake Rollinson, 21. Today, a judge at Nottingham Crown Court sentenced Rollinson to life in prison with a minimum 19-year term behind bars.

Family Devastated by Loss

In a heart-wrenching statement, Joseph’s mum Lisa described her son as a “loving and caring young man, with a smile that would light up a room.” She added:

“Joseph loved being around people and people loved being around him. He had a happy nature, and his warm and caring personality was loved by everyone. He was always looking out for his younger brothers and was a kind and loyal friend. I was always told ‘what a lovely polite young lad’ he was.”

Lisa continued: “Nothing or no one can prepare you for the loss of a child. It is not something anyone should ever have to experience. To have a child die is so devastating but to also deal with the fact that somebody brutally stabbed your precious child is another level.”

Rollinson’s Violent Past and Deception

Rollinson, who flaunted wads of cash and knives on social media, committed the stabbing in the kitchen of his grandmother’s house on Hickings Lane, Stapleford. He stabbed Joseph four times in the chest and leg, then tried to cover up the crime.

During a panicked 999 call just before 5.30am, he lied to police, claiming an unknown attacker stabbed Joseph outside. Supported by ex-girlfriend Lorna Richardson, 26, he said he found Joseph injured and brought him inside for help.

Officers quickly discounted his story as no blood was found outside. Joseph was rushed to hospital but died three days later. A large hunting-style knife used in the attack was found hidden in the garden.

Justice Served: Guilty Verdict and Sentencing

Despite Rollinson’s claims of self-defence, he was found guilty of murder after a three-week trial. He also admitted to attempting to pervert the course of justice. Richardson received a two-year prison sentence for her part in the cover-up.

Detective Inspector Steve Wragg of Nottinghamshire Police led the investigation, describing Rollinson as a violent, controlling bully who posed as Joseph’s friend but had threatened him before. Wragg said:

“Rollinson’s version of events was entirely dishonest. He falsely painted Joseph as the aggressor, adding insult to injury. The officers knew from the start the squalid reality—that Rollinson repeatedly stabbed his young victim with a large hunting-style knife he had no reason to possess.”

Detective Inspector Wragg concluded: “Today’s sentence ends a long ordeal for Joseph’s family, but it will never heal the pain of losing their son, brother and ‘little protector.’ I want to thank them for their courage and dignity during this unimaginably difficult time.”
