Huge Blaze Devours 400 Acres and Roof of Vacant Building

Firefighters battled a massive blaze that tore through 400 acres of fields and a disused building. The inferno, fuelled by dry weather, spread rapidly, putting nearby homes and the M11 motorway at risk.

Massive Response as Flames Rage

At the fire’s peak, 15 fire crews from Stansted and Chelmsford rolled in with two off-road vehicles, Southend’s Aerial Ladder Platform, and a specialist Urban Search and Rescue team. The combined effort helped contain the relentless fire.

Building Roof Damaged But Saved from Total Loss

Station Manager Dave Bond revealed embers set the roof of an empty two-storey building at Great Chesterford train station alight. “The roof was severely damaged, but crews stopped the flames from causing any more harm,” he said.

Crews Working Round the Clock

By 9.30pm, firefighters had the blaze under control, but Thaxted and Old Harlow crews stayed on to hunt down hotspots and ensure the fire wouldn’t flare up again. They plan to return for final checks in the morning.

“Crews worked exceptionally hard today in extreme conditions — I can’t thank them enough,” said Station Manager Kevin Jenner.

He also praised the community for rallying behind firefighters, handing out refreshments during the grueling operation.
