Kent Firefighters Launch ‘Fight Against Fire’ to Save Lives
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) are on a mission to slash fire risks across the county. On Thursday, 7 April, hundreds of firefighters will take to the streets to test and install smoke alarms in a one-day blitz dubbed the ‘Fight Against Fire’.
Free Home Fire Safety Checks: What to Expect
Firefighters will be knocking on doors, offering a quick, free home fire safety visit lasting around 10 minutes. They’ll test, relocate or fit smoke alarms where needed, give fire prevention tips, and answer questions.
- All firefighters carry KFRS branded photo ID. Residents can call 0800 923 7000 to confirm their identity.
- They’ll wear official uniforms with KFRS vehicles nearby.
- They never ask for money or bank details.
- Visits only happen with the resident’s permission and supervision.
Some visits may include non-uniformed staff members learning how the inspections work.
Chief Executive Warns: Smoke Alarms Save Lives
“Working smoke alarms really do save lives,” said KFRS Chief Executive Ann Millington. “We advise everyone to have at least one smoke alarm on every floor. They give vital early warning, helping people escape safely, call 999, and get our crews in quickly to minimise damage.”
She added: “We need residents to open their doors and let us in so we can make homes safer. Remember, every firefighter will show photo ID and provide a contact number if you want to check.”
Ongoing Safety Visits & Who Qualifies
Not everyone will get a knock on 7 April. Home fire safety visits are part of day-to-day KFRS duties, so if you miss out, you may be visited later.
KFRS also offer pre-booked Safe and Well visits for high-risk groups including:
- Residents over 70
- People with long-term health conditions
- Smokers
- Families with children under five
- Expectant mothers

Shockingly, 23% of domestic fires KFRS attended in 2020-21 involved properties without working smoke alarms. That’s nearly one in four homes where residents faced seriously increased risk of death, injury or property loss without early warning.
