In a case that highlights the importance of upholding professional standards, a serving Metropolitan Police officer, PC Daryl Marley, attached to the Central West Command Unit, has been found guilty of assaulting a fellow officer during an off-duty incident. The verdict was delivered on Monday, 18 September after a trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
PC Marley faced charges stemming from an incident that occurred during a work night out at a bar in Westminster in October 2022 when he assaulted a male officer. This incident led to his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. The court handed down a £500 fine to PC Marley, in addition to a £200 victim surcharge and £300 in court costs.
However, it is worth noting that a charge related to using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behavior that caused harassment, alarm, or distress to a female officer during the same incident was dismissed by the Judge.
Chief Superintendent Louise Puddefoot, responsible for overseeing policing in the Central West Command Unit, emphasized that police officers, whether on or off duty, have a responsibility to maintain the high standards expected by the public. She expressed that PC Marley’s actions fell short of these standards and that accountability for his behavior was essential.
As a result of the conviction, PC Marley remains suspended from duty. With the conclusion of criminal proceedings, misconduct proceedings against him can now move forward.
