Sunak Caught Out Over HS2 Claims: Pre-Recorded Video Shows Decision Made Days Ago

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s latest fib over the Manchester leg of HS2 has been exposed by ITV News. Sunak claimed no final decision had been made, but a pre-recorded video posted by him on X says otherwise — it was filmed at Downing Street at least three days before his Conservative Party Conference appearance in Manchester.

Downing Street Deception?

The video backdrop featured a Union flag and a hanging picture. ITV’s analysis confirms it was recorded in a famous No 10 room used for greeting world leaders. Yet throughout the week, Sunak insisted the HS2 northern leg was still up for debate.

On October 1, Sunak even told BBC’s Laura Kuennsberg that work was already underway on HS2, brushing off rumours of scrapping parts of the project. This new revelation blows that claim out of the water.

Sunak’s Shifty Script

When pressed by ITV Political Editor Robert Peston about changes to HS2, Sunak hinted at big decisions ahead. But the video’s timing shows those “bold steps” had already been planned and kept under wraps.

Sunak’s spokesperson insists the cabinet took the decision, with Transport Secretary Mark Harper bearing legal responsibility. Harper confirmed the cabinet signed it off on Tuesday.

HS2 U-Turn Sparks Fury

  • Abandoning HS2’s northern leg has stoked anger.
  • Ex-PM David Cameron slammed the move.
  • Harper defended it, blaming soaring costs, evolving travel habits post-pandemic, and “changing facts.”

Sunak Faces Police Probe Over Sturgeon Comments

As HS2 drama unfolds, Sunak is under fresh scrutiny. Police Scotland are reportedly investigating remarks he made about Nicola Sturgeon at the Tory Conference. Alba Party’s General Secretary has lodged a complaint, accusing Sunak of contempt of court during an ongoing probe into the former Scottish First Minister.

Calls for Truth in Politics

Amidst the chaos, demands are growing for tougher truthfulness rules in politics. Green MP Caroline Lucas has urged Sunak to get acquainted with the Nolan Principles of public life, calling for honesty from all public officials. The Conservative Party Conference has sparked a fierce debate over the integrity of political leaders.
