Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening as at least 22 people were killed and 50-60 injured in two active shooter events at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley. Authorities are investigating the incidents, marking it as the deadliest mass shooting in the US this year.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Robert Card, a certified firearms instructor and US Army Reserves member, is still at large. Police have released CCTV footage showing Card with a rifle at the bowling alley, urging residents to stay indoors and consider him “armed and dangerous.”
Card had reportedly been committed to a mental health facility recently after reporting hearing voices. The shootings occurred despite these concerns, prompting questions about the adequacy of mental health measures.
The manhunt extends beyond Lewiston, with a vehicle of interest located in Lisbon, Maine. Residents in Lisbon are advised to shelter in place as authorities intensify efforts to apprehend Card.
The Central Maine Medical Center has referred to the incidents as a “mass casualty, mass shooter event,” emphasising the gravity of the situation. The New Hampshire State Police is assisting in the search, utilising a helicopter in the efforts to locate Card.
