Retired Brickie Jim Gumbrell Sentenced for Killing Wife Debs

In a grim tragedy, retired bricklayer James “Jim” Gumbrell has been sentenced after killing his wife, 59-year-old Deborah “Debs” Gumbrell. The shocking attack happened at their Shoreham home, sparking a full murder probe.

Police Called After Jim Admits to Stabbing Debs

On October 24, 2022, Gumbrell shocked emergency services by calling police to admit he had stabbed his wife at their Northbourne Close house. Officers and paramedics rushed to the scene but despite their efforts, Debs was declared dead on arrival.

Guilty Plea to Manslaughter Over Debs’ Death

Gumbrell was charged with murder two days after the incident and held in custody. At Chichester Crown Court in March 2023, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility. The Crown Prosecution Service accepted the plea, and he was acquitted of murder.

Hospital Order Imposed at Sentencing

On May 24, 2024, at Lewes Crown Court, Gumbrell was sentenced under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act. Instead of prison, he was ordered to receive treatment in a hospital facility.

Detective’s Heartfelt Tribute to Debs

Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey said: “This is a tragic case in which a much-loved mother, grandmother and sister lost her life in horrific circumstances.

“We would like to express our condolences to Deborah’s family. Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time.”
