As of December 26, Shaftesbury Avenue is shut both ways between Wardour and Rupert Streets. The closure snarls traffic and forces bus diversions.
The crash scene sits smack between two famous stages: the Gielgud Theatre, home to Oliver, and the Sondheim Theatre, where Les Misérables plays on.
Man Arrested for Attempted Murder After Nightclub Row
Police arrested a 31-year-old man minutes after the smash. He’s charged with attempted murder.
Officers believe he was involved in a fight at a nearby nightclub before mounting the pavement in the busy theatre district.
“Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes,” said Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy. “Detectives are progressing enquiries swiftly. Several scenes remain in place today.”
Cundy confirmed this was an isolated incident, not terror-related.
Forensics Hunt Evidence at Scene of Carnage
Bloodstains, shoes, and jackets littered pavement near Caffe Concerto, opposite where the crash happened. Forensics teams were seen bagging vital evidence.
