A pastor faces gross negligence manslaughter charges following the tragic drowning of a man during a baptism ceremony in Birmingham.
Death at Garden Baptism Pool
Robert Smith, 61, from Brixton, London, died on 8 October 2023 after drowning during a religious service at a private home in Erdington. Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save him. The baptism was conducted by Life Changing Ministries in a small pool in the garden of the Erdington property. The event was being live-streamed on the church’s Facebook page before the stream was abruptly cut and later removed.
Pastor Cheryl Bartley Charged
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that 48-year-old Cheryl Bartley, the pastor overseeing the ceremony, has been charged in connection with Mr Smith’s death. Bartley, also from Erdington, is set to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 14 May. Mr Smith reportedly travelled to Birmingham specifically for the baptism and had been a church member for four years.
Investigation Continues
Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, said prosecutors worked closely with West Midlands Police throughout the investigation.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Mr Smith at this difficult time,” McHaffie said.
