Earl of Wessex Rides Into Portsmouth to Celebrate Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Success
The Earl of Wessex paid a special visit to Motiv8’s Community Cycle Hub in Portsmouth to see how The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is transforming young lives. This year marks the Award’s Diamond Anniversary, celebrating 60 years of helping millions across the UK and worldwide since 1956.
Motiv8: Changing Lives on Two Wheels
Motiv8 has been a major player in delivering the DofE since taking over from Portsmouth City Council two years ago. They’ve expanded the programme through Open Centres, reaching young people often missed by schools and other groups.
What makes Motiv8’s offering stand out? Their unique Bicycle Recycling social enterprise, born after the 2011 civil unrest, creates jobs and training opportunities for youths.
- First shop launched in Gosport, 2012
- Portsmouth Community Cycle Hub opened in 2014
- Naval Base Cycle Hub followed in 2016
Bicycle Recycling gives young people a practical platform for completing DofE skill and volunteer sections and teams up with partners for the physical and expedition challenges—often involving cycling adventures.
The Earl of Wessex: Championing Youth for 60 Years
As both a Trustee and Gold Award holder, HRH The Earl of Wessex has long supported the DofE. On his Diamond Anniversary tour around the UK, he’s highlighting the incredible dedication of volunteers and the impressive achievements of young participants.
“It’s fantastic to see Motiv8 and Bicycle Recycling being recognised for the outstanding work they do,” said Peter Westgarth, CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. “Enormous thanks to the volunteers who ensure every participant benefits from this life-changing experience.”
DofE Diamond Challenge: Everyone Can Take Part
While the official DofE Award is for 14 to 24-year-olds, the charity is urging people of all ages to join the DofE Diamond Challenge this anniversary year.
Participants can set personal goals in adventure, skills, or other challenges to get a taste of what makes the DofE so transformative. To enter, visit www.DofEDiamondChallenge.org.
The Earl of Wessex will continue his nationwide tour, celebrating the Award’s impact until October.
