Tragic Baby Death: Mum Jailed Over Suffocation of Eight-Month-Old
Caitlin Jones, 21, from Willowbank Avenue, has been sentenced to five years and eight months behind bars for the manslaughter of eight-month-old Francesca Haworth. The heart-wrenching case unfolded after emergency services were called to a Frederick Street address at 7.30am on November 7, 2018, following reports that the baby was unresponsive.
Disturbing Details Emerge from Investigation
Francesca was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital but tragically died. A post-mortem revealed suffocation as the cause of death. Detectives seized Jones’ phone and iPad during their investigation. Shocking searches found on her devices included terms about suffocating babies and the legal consequences of such actions.
At the hospital, Jones asked if she would be held responsible and gave conflicting accounts of how she found Francesca in her cot. She was arrested and charged with murder in July 2020. However, prosecutors later accepted her guilty plea to manslaughter.
Police and Prosecutors Blast Mother’s Callous Actions
“The death of Francesca Haworth was utterly tragic, heartbreaking and wholly avoidable,” said Det Ch Insp Gareth Willis of Lancashire Police. “A baby is reliant on the care and trust of her mother. Caitlin Jones should have been her source of love. Instead, she showed little regard for Francesca’s welfare that day.”
“Jones has never explained why or what she did. But she admitted she intended to cause harm, which is beyond comprehension.
“She made internet searches about suffocating babies and whether she could be charged, then deleted them just before calling emergency services. Her inconsistent statements and unusual behaviour at the hospital — asking if she’d be held responsible — were deeply unsettling.”
“Our thoughts are with Francesca’s father and family who have shown remarkable dignity during this painful time.”
Senior District Crown Prosecutor Isla Chilton added: “This was a deliberate and premeditated act by Jones to suffocate her own baby. Despite calling for help, it was too late. Forensic evidence proved it was no accident. Jones even tried to blame her partner for the damning internet searches.”
