Shoplifter Caught Red-Handed with Knife in Ashford
Oliver Hilden Busted on CCTV
Oliver Hilden, 41, from Cuckoo Lane, was caught on camera stealing from shops and a home in Ashford. On 6 November 2023, Ashford’s Community Safety Unit spotted him on CCTV after three separate shoplifting offences at the local shopping centre.
Parcel Theft Links Him to More Crimes
The same officer later matched Hilden to a stolen parcel from a residential address in Ashford. This crime was being investigated by Ashford’s Victim Based Crime Team, who also connected him to three more shoplifting incidents in Ashford town centre earlier that summer.
Arrest Uncovers Dangerous Weapon
Hilden was arrested on 12 November 2023. A search revealed he was carrying a knife. He now faces seven counts of shoplifting, one theft charge, and possession of a deadly weapon.
Swift Justice at Medway Magistrates’ Court
At Medway Magistrates’ Court on 13 November, Hilden pleaded guilty to all charges. He was slammed with 180 days behind bars the same day.
PC Steve Harding said: “This case shows brilliant teamwork, bringing persistent offenders like Hilden to justice fast. We take shoplifting seriously and urge business owners to keep reporting crimes.
“We are also committed to tackling knife crime. Operation Sceptre highlights our work targeting habitual knife carriers and conducting weapon sweeps to keep our communities safe.”
