A former remand prisoner is in custody, being questioned over the murder of a beloved 57-year-old prison officer on the Isle of Wight. The officer, who had served for many years, was attacked while celebrating Christmas with his family and tragically died on Christmas morning.
One-Punch Attack Shocks Christmas Celebrations
The 26-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene on Pier Street after what is thought to be a one-punch attack. The victim was recognised by the attacker before the violent assault. Despite desperate efforts from paramedics and police, the officer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two Others Held Over Murder Investigation
Two more men remain in custody, also on suspicion of murder. Police have until 1am Tuesday to charge the main suspect. Police Superintendent Sarah Jackson has extended the detention period to 36 hours, after which they must charge the man or seek magistrates’ permission to continue questioning.
Police Plea for Witnesses
Officers are urging anyone near the Rose Inn on Christmas night to come forward. “If you were in the area at the time, you could have vital information to help our investigation,” said a spokesperson.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting Operation Extension.
