Jamie Arnold Locked Up for Racist Gestures
A football fan has been jailed after racially abusing former England star and TV pundit Rio Ferdinand during a Premier League match at Molineux Stadium.
Jamie Arnold, 33, from Stone, Staffordshire, was convicted last month of making racist gestures towards Ferdinand at the Wolves vs Manchester United game in May 2021.
Thorough Probe Leads to Conviction
The conviction followed a detailed investigation led by PC Stuart Ward, the UK’s first dedicated hate crime officer within a football unit.
Arnold was found guilty of racially aggravated public order charges at wolverhampton-crown-court/" title="Wolverhampton Crown Court" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="941">Wolverhampton Crown Court. This wasn’t his first offence at the same game — he’d already been banned from football matches for three years after hurling homophobic slurs and mimicking disability gestures.
Six Months Inside and Seven-Year Banning Order
Today, Arnold was sentenced to six months behind bars and slapped with a seven-year football banning order, forbidding him from attending any matches across the UK.
PC Ward blasted Arnold’s behaviour: “There is no place for discrimination within football, and society in general, and Arnold has quite rightly lost his freedom.”
“His behaviour was offensive and unacceptable, and others in the ground were just as appalled as I was by his actions.”
“Thanks to Rio’s help and fans who came forward with statements, we secured this conviction. We urge victims to report hate crimes so we can bring offenders to justice.”
“Arnold should feel utterly embarrassed by what he did. Hopefully, his time inside will make him realise such appalling behaviour is never tolerated.”
