Ex-School Coach Jailed for Child Sex Assault
Ajaz Karim, a former sports coach at Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham, has been jailed for 21 months. The 70-year-old, who worked at the school from 1983 to 1993, was convicted of indecent assault on a girl under 14.
Guilty Verdict at Lewes Crown Court
Karim, from Broadlove Lane, Greater London, was found guilty on 29 November at Lewes Crown Court. The victim, now in her 40s, reported the abuse in November 2022, revealing Karim assaulted her when she was just 12 and 13 years old.
After a detailed investigation and self-appointed interview, Karim was charged in December 2023. The four-day trial started on 25 November. The jury returned a guilty verdict on one count of indecent assault but failed to reach a decision on a second charge.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
Detective Constable Rebecca Wilde from Sussex Police’s Complex Abuse Unit commended the victim’s bravery for coming forward. She urged all sexual offence survivors to report abuse promptly, no matter when it happened. “Victims will be supported and their cases fully investigated,” Wilde assured.
