Hospital Horror: Maintenance Worker Goes on Brutal Rampage
A terrifying attack rocked Central Middlesex Hospital in north London as Matteo Bottarelli, a 44-year-old maintenance worker, allegedly tried to murder three colleagues in a violent spree.
Violent Assault in Broad Daylight
On June 21 last year, Bottarelli reportedly launched a savage assault on his coworkers. Trevor McGuire and Gideon Tesfay suffered serious head and neck injuries, while line manager Mark Quigley narrowly escaped harm.
Shedding light on the chaos, the court heard how Bottarelli, under the influence of heroin, slashed Mr Tesfay’s throat with a scalpel before viciously attacking the others with a mattock—a heavy pickaxe-like tool. Gripping CCTV showed Bottarelli chasing Mr Tesfay through the hospital car park, brandishing the weapon in a chilling scene.
Brutal Attack and Narrow Escapes
Prosecutor Sean Larkin described how Bottarelli confronted Mr Tesfay in the hospital canteen before attacking with the scalpel. The violent assault continued outside, with Bottarelli giving chase through the car park, intent on further harm.
Mr McGuire was struck multiple times on the head with the mattock. Meanwhile, Mr Quigley told the court how Bottarelli raised the weapon above his head, ready to strike—only to stop abruptly, sparing him.
Manhunt Ends in Blood-Soaked Arrest
After the attack, Bottarelli fled to his nearby home. Armed police found him covered in blood, with self-inflicted neck wounds. It emerged he had taken heroin earlier that day. Authorities seized a stash of knives and scalpels from his residence.
Bottarelli has pleaded guilty to wounding Mr McGuire and Mr Tesfay with intent but denies attempting to murder any of the three men. The trial continues as jurors weigh the shocking evidence.
