Speed Dodger Jailed for Faking Stolen Number Plates
Ayaan Rafiq, 31, from Keighley, has landed behind bars after lying about stolen number plates to dodge speeding fines—twice.
Repeated Lies Don’t Pay
In May 2023, Rafiq was caught speeding in Shipley in his BMW. He claimed the car’s number plates had been nicknapped, and the cops dropped the case. But that was just the start.
Two months later, he did the same thing after being caught speeding on the M1, spinning the identical story about stolen plates.
Police Use Tech to Catch Faker
Officers weren’t having it. They tracked Rafiq’s mobile phone and found it was right inside the BMW when he claimed the plates were stolen. The lie was exposed cold.
Jail Time and Driving Ban
At Bradford Crown Court on Monday, 23 March, Rafiq pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and making a false police report. He was slammed with 20 months in jail and banned from driving for 22 months.
This wasn’t his first rodeo. Earlier in 2024, he received a suspended sentence after trying a similar stunt to beat speeding charges.
